Allan’s Journey

Allan’s journey is one of resilience, transformation, and purpose. Born with sickle cell disease 35 years ago, he grew up navigating chronic pain and the physical and emotional challenges that accompanied the condition. From childhood, he became intimately aware of the gaps in healthcare access, limited public understanding, and the lack of strong advocacy for individuals living with sickle cell disease.

Years of recurring pain crises and medical complications shaped not only his lived experience but also his perspective on care and compassion. A turning point came when Allan underwent groundbreaking gene therapy that successfully treated his sickle cell disease. This life-changing moment restored his health and redefined his future, igniting a deeper calling to serve others facing similar struggles.

Driven by both personal conviction and professional purpose, Allan became a licensed psychotherapist in Uganda and the United States. He now dedicates his work to supporting individuals and families affected by chronic illness, trauma, and systemic healthcare disparities. His unique combination of lived experience and clinical expertise allows him to approach his work with authenticity, empathy, and unwavering advocacy.

As the Founder and Director of the Byamukama Sickle Cell Foundation, Allan channels his journey into action—raising awareness, improving healthcare outcomes, influencing policy, and strengthening community support systems. Through education, advocacy, and partnership, he continues to work toward a future where every individual living with sickle cell disease receives equitable, respectful, and effective care.
